Halloween How-To's
Halloween Bouquet
You will need: * Halloween Gift Wrapping Paper, or any orange or black paper ($3 - 5) * Gold Glitter Glue ($2 - 3 for one small bottle) * Halloween Ribbon (found at any craft store in October, or at WalMart) ($1 - 5) * Purple, Black, Red, or Orange Fake Flowers (found at any craft store in October, or at WalMart) ($1 - 9, depending on size and quantity of flowers) * Fake Cobwebs ($1 - 5) * Spider Rings ($1 - 2) * Tape * Scissors NOTE: Many craft stores sell fake flowers in many different colors and shapes. Try not sticking to one type of flower (i.e. roses) if you plan on having different colors. Try mixing them; have some with larger petals, some flowers, some big, some with vibrant color, some dull. Keep in mind that this will be a Halloween bouquet. You want dark colors like black and purple, but also bright colors like orange and red. Avoid buying colors like pink or light blue. Step 1 Take your flowers and find what position you want them to be in. If you only have one color of flowers, you can skip this step. If you have multiple colors, find what flowers you want to be placed together. You can look online for examples of bouquets, but for this Halloween bouquet, you want the darker colors around the bouquet, with the lighter colors in the center, to give it dimension. You may also consider mixing these colors. For example, do not have the bouquet in rings (black on the outside, then purple, red, and orange on the inside). Try mixing them, leading to a gradual shift in color. The center should have the lightest color, but leading into the center, you may mix oranges and reds next to each other. Step 2 Once you have the general idea of how you want your flowers, select the quantity of how many flowers you want included, and wrap them together with a rubber band so that they don’t move loosely. Step 3 Use another rubber band or a strip of tape to hold your colored paper around the flowers. The paper should be big enough that it holds up around the petals. Do not have the paper below the flowers, or too much above them, either. Step 4 Tie a bow over the rubber band or tape with the Halloween ribbon. If you do not want to use patterned ribbon, use plain colored ribbon, like orange or black. Step 5 Add gold glitter glue around the rim of the paper, where the flowers are. This brightens the look of the bouquet. Step 6 (Optional) Add an Autumn scented perfume or room spray to the bouquet. Just add a very little, or else the flowers won’t smell nice. Total Cost: $20 - 23 Halloween Oreo “Lollipops”
You will need: * Popsicle sticks which can be purchased at any craft store and most one dollar stores for $1 - 4. * A box of Oreos ($3) * One or two bags of white chocolate chips (for best results, use Nestles), melted ($3 per bag) * One bag of dark chocolate chips, melted ($4) * Orange food coloring (which can be found at most grocery stores) (If you cannot find orange food coloring, mix red and yellow food coloring, $3 each) * Wax Paper or Aluminum Foil Step 1 Take the Oreos out of their container and stick the Popsicle sticks in them, making sure not to go all the way through. Step 2 On a double broiler, melt the white chocolate, making sure to stir constantly. If a double broiler is not to be found, pour water into a pot. Then, place a glass bowl on top of the pot. The water should touch the bottom of the glass bowl, but it should not be able to enter. Pour the bag of white chocolate chips into the glass bowl to melt, stirring constantly. Do not melt the white chocolate in a microwave because it will solidify quicker than if you did it on a stove, and won’t taste as good. Step 3 Once the chocolate is melted, add the orange food coloring and stir it in until the white chocolate is orange. The darker orange you want it, the more food coloring you add. The lighter the orange color you want, the less food coloring you want to add. Once this is over, cover the chocolate completely over the Oreo cookies. Step 4 Cover a plate or cookie sheet with wax paper or aluminum foil and place the chocolate-covered Oreo pops on it. Put it in the freezer to get hard. Step 5 Once the Oreo Pops are hard, and a good orange color, melt the dark chocolate chips. Use the same melting method as before. Then, with a spoon, drizzle a face on one side of the Oreo Pop, one at a time. For more of a Halloween feel, make the faces look like Jack-o-Lanterns. Total Cost: $20 Recipe makes: about 30 servings Funkin Gifts for Friends and Family
You will need: * A small, hollow Funkin, also known as a fake pumpkin. ($7 at Michael's) * Tissue Paper (black and orange) * “Fun Sized” Candy ($1 - $2 for a full bag at WalMart) * Assorted Halloween items; fake black roses can be found for as cheap as 75 cents; bags of spider rings can be found at most stores for as cheap as a dollar; tiny Halloween globes are 75 cents at some stores; etc. *Scissors * A knife * Super Glue or hot glue ($5) Step 1 With a knife, carefully cut the Funkin at the top so that you make a removable lid. To do this, measure the Funkin so that you cut the top off in a 1/3 way. Only cut off a top third of the fake pumpkin. The Funkin should now look like a bowel. Step 2 Take your glue of choice and secure the “lid” of your Funkin on the “body” or “bowl” portion. The lid should be tilted away from the body, but connected firmly. The Funkin should be open, so tilt the lid away from the body, not toward it. Step 3 Place a drop of glue in the center of the “bowl” portion. Then, add a colored tissue paper. Then, add another drop of glue, and place another tissue paper. For best results, do this until you have three or four tissue papers. Place them in a pattern (i.e. black, orange, black, orange) to give the project a more festive feel. Step 4 After the glue has dried, and the tissue paper is secure, add small candies, toys, or other Halloween items. Give this Halloween Funkin to a friend or family member as a special treat. Total cost: $15 Decorative Funkins
You will need: * A Funkin ($7 at Michael's) * Gold Paint ($3) * Black Paint ($3) * A paintbrush or sponge brush * Ribbons ($1 - 5) * Fake Flowers, medium sized ($4 - 6) * Other accessories, such as Halloween lollipops ($1), cobwebs ($1 - 5), Plastic Spider Rings ($1 - 2), etc. * Knife * Scissors * Hot Glue or Super Glue ($5) Step 1 With a knife, carefully cut four holes on the top of the Funkin. The holes should be separated from each other, but along the same circular line. Step 2 With your black paint, paint designs on your Funkin. You can paint a witch on a broom, a crescent moon shape with little stars around it, or whatever other designs you want. The picture needs to be painted in like a silhouette. When you’re done with your picture, let it dry. Step 3 With your gold paint, paint the edge of your black picture. The Funkin should now have a black picture with a gold rim. Step 4 With a pair of scissors, cut the fake flowers until they are a desirable length. It should be long enough to be settled into the Funkin’s holes you created earlier, but short enough that you don’t see a lot of steam sticking out. If you wanted to add things like Halloween pencils or lollipops, or other similar items, now is the time to do it. Step 5 Cut your ribbon and tie it around the flowers and other long items. You should already have the flowers inside the Funkin when you do this step. Make sure the ribbon hangs down the fake pumpkin a little. Step 6 With your glue, add any small details (like plastic spider rings and cobwebs) onto the Funkin. You can do this in any way you want; the point is to make it Halloween inspired. Total Cost: $20 - 30 (depending on how many items you add, where you buy the items, and what items you chose to buy) Zombie Girl or Boy
You will need: * Clothes you are willing to destroy forever (white is always a great choice) * Shoes you are willing to stain * Scissors * Fake Blood ($1 - 5) * Black eye shadow ($1 - 3) * Red face paint ($5) * Green face paint ($5) Step 1 Ruin your clothes. Rip them, splatter them with fake blood, toss dirt on them -- whatever you have to do to make it look like you had a crazy fight with a zombie and lost. Step 2 Put on the filthy clothes. Step 3 Find where you want your zombie bite to be. A good option is your arm, or even your neck. When you find the right place, put green face paint there, in a messy oval shape. Then, go on top of it with the red face paint, making sure some of the green still shows. Be very messy around the edges; zombies aren’t clean eaters. Then, add black eye shadow, in parts, on the inside of the red. Cover the entire area with fake blood. It should now look like an infected zombie wound. You can repeat this step along areas of your face, on your legs, and anywhere else it will be highly noticed. Step 4 On your face, be sure to make scrapes and small cuts with your red face paint. Go over them with the fake blood. You can create bruising anywhere you wish by combining a little green face paint and some black eye shadow. Total Cost: $18 Mickey Mouse
You will need: * Red shorts (or pants, if shorts make you uncomfortable) * Yellow shoes (If you don’t have yellow, get white shoes and yellow paint. * Large white buttons ($2) or white fabric paint ($5) * Super glue or hot glue ($5 - 8) * Black, long-sleeve t-shirt * Long, black socks * Mickey Mouse Ears ($4 - 5 at most Halloween stores) * Black eyeliner (or black face paint) ($5) * White gloves ($2 at Halloween costume shops) Step 1 Take your red shorts or pants, and either glue the white buttons on the front part, close to each other. If you can’t use buttons, take the white paint and paint it in the same parts, in filled-in circles about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Let dry. Step 2 If you can’t find yellow shoes, take a pair of white shoes and paint them yellow. (Thrift stores have large varieties of shoes that you can buy for as cheap as a dollar, and not feel guilty for ruining them with paint.) Step 3 Assemble all the pieces. You should be dressed like Mickey Mouse. Step 4 With the eyeliner or face paint, put a mouse nose on your nose. The nose should look like an oval. Total Cost: $15 - 20 Vampire Girl
You will need: * Black clothes (pants, top, skirt, or dress) * White face paint ($5) * Fake blood ($1 - 5) * Red lipstick * Black, purple, and gray eye shadows, with no glitter or shimmer ($2 - 6) * Black shoes * Vampire fangs (optional) ($3 - 7) * Baby powder (optional) Step 1 Put on all your clothes. Step 2 Apply the white face paint as indicated on the container. Let dry. As an alternative, if baby powder is available, you may use this all over your face and neck to give your natural skin tone a paler look. Step 3 Apply your red lipstick normally to your lips. Go over it with baby powder. Step 4 Take the purple eye shadow and put it on the inner part of your bottom eyelid. This should create a shadow, like bags under your eyes. Step 5 Then, use the grey eye shadow under each of your cheeks, and along your temples to give you dimension. If you are used to wearing makeup, you may recognize that this is the same process as contouring, but with a grey color. This is meant to make you look soul kin and dead, like a vampire. Step 6 (optional) Apply eye shadow normally to your eyelids with the grey and black eye shadows. Step 7 With a Q-tip, take some fake blood, and apply it to the sides of your mouth and two dots on your neck. If you need to add more baby powder to your lips, do so now. Also put in your fangs, if you chose to buy them. Total Cost: $20 - 23 |
Princess
You will need: * A blue or pink dress * White shoes * A tiara ($5 - 10 at any costume shop) * A red or blue bed sheet ($10) * Newspaper and regular printer or notebook paper * Coloring markers or crayons * Tape or liquid glue Note: You may also change the dress to be a long skirt and matching blouse. Step 1 Put on the clothes. Step 2 Tie the bed sheet around your shoulders. Cut the bottom off if it is too long or drags on the floor. Step 3 If you want a scepter, take some newspaper, and roll it up into a very long, and very thin tube. Tape it together. Color it with markers or crayon in a gold, yellow, gray, or silver color. Then, cut out two stars from regular paper, making sure they are the same size. Glue or tape them both on either side of your newspaper stick. It should now appear as a star staff or scepter. Total Cost: $20 Prince
You will need: * A red bed sheet ($10) * Any Liquid Glue ($3 - 5) * Scotch Tape * A crown ($10 at a costume shop) or white printer paper * Scissors * Crayons, markers, or colored pencils * Boots or nice shoes * Pants (avoid jeans, unless they are colored a bold color like red or royal blue; you don’t want to use “every-day” jeans) * An oversized, white, long sleeve t-shirt (you want if flow) (You can also use a “pirate” shirt from a costume shop, but it’s easier to just use an oversized normal one.) * A sword ($7 at some costume shops, or read on to learn how to make your own) * A vest to match the color of your pants Step 1 Get a red bed sheet; tie it around your shoulders to make a cape. Step 2 Measure the diameter of your head with printer paper. You may need two pieces of paper to go completely around your head. If this is the case, you will just need to tape the two pieces together. Step 3 Once you measure your head, make sure you have enough paper to make the crown. Then, cut out a crown shape. Color it yellow, orange, or gold with crayons or colored pencils. Then, add embellishments, such as drawn-on diamonds and other jewels. Step 4 Once your crown is cut and colored, tape all the ends together so that it fits your head well. It should not be too tight or else it will rip, and it shouldn’t be too loose or else it will fall down your face. It should be able to go down right above your eyebrow, but no lower. Step 5 To make your sword, take some cardboard, and cut out the basic shape of a sword. You can draw on it with marker, paint, or crayon. The handle of the sword should be rectangular, and colored silver, grey, black, brown, or gold. The “blade” part should be grey or silver. Add embellishments to the handle to make it look princelier. Things like drawings of jewels, or glued on rhinestones. Step 6 Assemble all the pieces. Total Cost: $15 - 30 Goofy
(girl and boy; no differentiation) You will need: * A long-sleeve orange t-shirt (yellow can be used as a substitute if orange is scarce to be found) * Black or dark brown shoes * Blue jeans * A black tank top * Sharp Scissors * Fabric Glue (Super Glue or Hot Glue can be used instead, but for best results, you should use fabric glue) ($8) * Green Beanie ($3) (If you can’t find a green beanie, you can dye a white beanie with green fabric dye. This step would cost $7) * Black eyeliner (or black face paint) ($5) * White gloves ($2 at Halloween costume shops) Step 1 Take the sharp scissors and cut the tank top down middle of the front. Make sure the scissors are sharp, or else they will not cut the fabric well. Do not cut the entire shirt in half; you just the front side. Step 2 Fold the cut flaps on the front of the shirt two inches inward, folding the fabric behind the front so that the flaps don’t show. When you have it folded the amount you want, glue it in place. Make sure not to glue the front of the tank top to the back. Once the glue is dried, try it on. It should look like a vest. Step 3 If you do not have a green beanie, take a white beanie and some green fabric dye. (Fabric dye can be found at any craft store.) Take a bowl or bucket and dye the beanie according to your specific Fabric Dye instructions. These instructions can usually be found on the back of the packaging. Step 4 When all your pieces are dry and ready to wear, assemble all the pieces. You should now be dressed as Goofy. Step 5 With the black eyeliner (or face paint), draw a dog nose on your real nose. Step 6 If you have medium or long length hair, you can section it on both sides of your head to make ponytails. This will act as your “dog ears.” This is not a necessary step; most people will know who you are dressed up as whether you have ears or not. Total Cost: $10 - $20 (Depending on if you need to buy items, and where you buy them.) Vampire Boy
You will need: * Black clothes (pants, t-shirt) * White face paint ($5) * Fake blood ($1 - 5) * Purple and gray eye shadows, with no glitter or shimmer ($2 - 6) * Black shoes * Vampire fangs (optional) ($3 - 7) * Baby powder (optional) Step 1 Put on all your clothes. Step 2 Apply the white face paint as indicated on the container. Let dry. As an alternative, if baby powder is available, you may use this all over your face and neck to give your natural skin tone a paler look. Step 3 Put in your fangs, if you chose to buy them. Step 4 With a Q-tip, put the fake blood at the edges of your lips and two dots on your neck. Step 5 (optional) Put the purple eye shadow on the inner part of your bottom eyelids to create bags under your eyes. Place the gray eye shadow under your cheeks and along your temples to make your face look dead and sunken. Frankenstein Monster
(not gender specific) You will need: * Green face paint ($5) * A black lip liner, or face paint ($1 - 5) * A large coat or blazer (colors brown, black, or purple) * Pants to match * Brown or black shoes * White shirt Step 1 Put on all the clothes. Step 2 Apply the green face paint as indicated on the container. Let dry. Step 3 With your black eyeliner or face paint, draw a line across your forehead and go over it with small x’s. This will be a "stitch." You may also draw little scrapes or cuts on your face and neck. Step 4 (optional) If you have any makeup you can use, get a black eye shadow and put it very lightly under your eyes. This would also work with purple eye shadow. The purpose is to make you look "dead." Total Cost: $10 Minnie Mouse
You will need: * A red, pink, or blue skirt or dress (the girlier the better) * Pink or yellow shoes (Minnie wears small high heels, but if that makes you uncomfortable, you can use flat shoes.) * Black tights * A pink or red hair bow ($1 - 3) * White gloves ($2 at Halloween costume shops) * Black eyeliner (or black face paint) ($5) * Mickey Mouse Ears ($4 - 5 at most Halloween stores) Note: Minnie tends to wear a blue dress with a pink bow and pink shoes, a pink dress with a pink bow and pink shoes, or a red dress with a red bow and yellow shoes. The red dress and bow are usually accompanied with white polka dots. Step 1 Find the Minnie Mouse outfit you want to wear, taking heed of her usual pairings. If you want to wear a skirt, accompany it with a short-sleeve shirt the same color. If you want to wear a dress, that is even better. Remember that Minnie tends to wear polka dots with her pink or red outfits, but usually not with the blue outfit. Step 2 Assemble all the pieces, including the gloves and ears. Step 3 If you cannot find Mickey Mouse Ears, and your hair is dark and long, you can make your own ears with just a hair brush, bobby pins, hairspray, and hair bands. To do this, put your hair into two high ponytails. They should be right at the very top of your head with only 1 1/2 to 2 inches separating them from each other. Tease your hair and put them into two hair buns. Spray hairspray over them to keep them in place, add your hair bands, and secure them in place with bobby pins. Since these hair buns will act as your ears, you don’t want them falling down. Step 4 Draw on a mouse nose with your eyeliner or face paint. Total Cost: $10 - 15 (assuming you own the clothes already) |

Halloween how-to'sCupcake Monsters
You will need: * Cupcake liners ($2 - $3) * Vanilla cake mix (store bought or homemade) ($3) * Edible Decorative Candy Eyeballs by Wiltons (these are basically candy that looks like eyes, and are bought in a pack at any craft store) ($4) * Thick Frosting (You can add food coloring to white frosting to make a certain monster, or else buy colored frosting.) ($5 per bought container) * White chocolate chips ($3) * Knife and fork Step 1 Put together a cake mix. Homemade cake mixes work best, but there is nothing wrong with using a store-bought mix. After the mix is perfectly blended together, add it to a cupcake tray with cupcake liners. Put the tray in the oven, following the instructions your chosen recipe indicates. A store-bought cake mix will give you these instructions on the back of the box. Step 2 When it is time to remove the cupcakes, do so, and let them cool completely. You do not want to frost a warm cupcake, or else the frosting will turn into a glaze and drip. Step 3 When the cupcakes are completely cool, take a knife and cut a shallow semicircle out of one half of the top of the cupcake. Take some black frosting, and add it to this shallow hole. This will represent the mouth of the “monster.” Don’t put too much frosting that it sticks out of the hole you created; leave the frosting flat. Then, if you want to, add a small circle or oval of red frosting to represent the tongue: this is optional. Step 4 Then, put a different colored, thick frosting on each one. Since these will be monster cupcakes, use colors like blue, purple, red, or green. Avoid light colors like pink and yellow. Step 5 With a fork or knife, use the tip to twist the frosting in small sections, close to each other. The frosting should be thick enough that when you twist it, it pulls up and out to create “monster hair.” Add more frosting as needed to achieve this look. Step 6 Place in fridge. The coolness of the fridge will hold the frosting in place better than if you left it in an open area. Step 7 Add the edible candy eyes. If you cannot buy any, use chocolate chips to make eyes. Then, add white chocolate chips to the inside of the mouth to create teeth. Total Cost: $14 - 20 Note: How many items you buy and where you buy them can adjust the price of this project. For instance, if you bought three containers of frosting, it would cost more than if you only bought one. Likewise, the price may also vary if your recipe is homemade as opposed to store-bought. |
last minute costumesWitch
You will need: * A black dress (purple or blue can be used as a substitute if you do not own black) * Hot glue ($5) * Flat cardboard * Black felt ($0.75 for one 9x12” piece of felt at Walmart or a craft store; quantity will depend on the size of your head) * Black shoes * A broom ($5 at any costume shop) * One sheet of printer paper * Marker, crayon, or coloring pencil * Scissors * Tape * Tape Measure Note: If you don’t want to buy a witch broom from a costume shop, you don’t have to. Instead, make the wand. You do not need both of them together. Step 1 Take your tape measure and measure your head. You should measure the top-half of your forehead, since this is likely where your hat will be placed. Step 2 Get a pencil, and mark on the cardboard the beginning part of the tape measure, and where it ended when you measured your head. You should now have two dots straight across from each other. Do this again going the opposite direction, so that you now have four dots, resembling a plus sign. Step 3 With the four dots as a guide, draw a light circle. Then, cut out that circle. Your cardboard should now have a hole in it. Step 4 From where the hole is in your cardboard, measure five inches forward all the way around the hole. Then, cut that out. Now you should have a circle piece of cardboard with a hole in the middle of it. Make sure you can fit it on your head. In the place you want your hat to rest. If it’s snug, cut it out a little so that it fits easier. The cardboard should then be cut so that it is loose enough around your head that you can fit the top of your pinky finger between the cardboard and your head. This is because you will later cover it with felt, and if the cardboard fits “just right” before the felt, after you add it on, the cardboard will be too small. Step 5 With your glue, add felt to the cardboard. Near the center, make sure some felt hangs out. Then, glue more felt to those little parts hanging out. You want to end up with a crooked, black triangle. It should be loose enough that it does not stand straight up. You want the bottom half (towards your head) to stand up, but the top half (away from your head) to hang at the side. Once the glue is dried, your hat is ready. Step 6 To make your want, take a paper and fold it into a thin tube. Make it as thin as you can. Color it brown or black, and tape it. This is your wand. Step 7 Assemble all your clothing items, broom or wand, and hat. You should look like a witch. Total Cost: $15 - 20 |
